August 29 2021 – Rangers defeat Celtic 1-0 at Ibrox, in what proved to be the last Old Firm match of the Steven Gerrard era. The manager didn’t get to see it, confined to his home by Covid. His team were also without goalkeepers Allan McGregor and Jon McLaughlin as well as captain James Tavernier and his right back deputy Nathan Patterson due to the virus. But with Leon Balogun outstanding as an emergency full-back and youngster Robbie McCrorie playing his first ever Ibrox match in goal, the home team won thanks to a headed goal by centre back Filip Helander early in the second half. The result meant Celtic’s new boss Ange Postecoglu was already under pressure after a bad start in the league and an early exit in Champions League qualifying.
August 30 1975 – the first ever Old Firm match in the new look Scottish Premier League takes place on the opening day of the league season at Ibrox. The crowd of over 69,000 has never been bettered at the stadium since, and they saw Rangers come back from a goal down at half-time to win 2-1. Jock Wallace’s men grabbed the win thanks to a magnificent Derek Johnstone volley and a solo goal by winger Quinton Young. Rangers played the closing stages with ten men following a red card for midfielder Alex MacDonald.

Things looked bleak for the Ibrox team, but second half goals by Harold Davis and Ralph Brand saw the home fans have their celebrations cut short and a party in the Rangers end instead. Rangers went on to lift the trophy.
September 04 1996 – German midfielder Jorg Albertz scored his first competitive goal for Rangers in a 3-1 win in the League Cup at Ibrox over Ayr United. “The Hammer” went on to become one of the favourite players of the Rangers support in recent times, mainly thanks to his big game and big goal contributions. His record against Celtic was exceptional for a player who was not a forward. In 21 starts in Old Firm games, he scored 8 times, with goals at Ibrox, Parkhead and Hampden. Since Albertz left the club in 2001, only Kenny Miller has scored more Old Firm goals (he scored 10 for Rangers).
