As reported by The Sun, Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Barcelona midfielder Andre Gomes in the January transfer window.
What’s the story?
Spurs didn’t make a massive amount of signings in the summer window, especially in midfield, and adding freshness there either mid-season or next summer will be seen as a key priority for supporters.
They may be pleased then that the club apparently have the same thinking.
The Sun report that Spurs are interested in Portuguese international Andre Gomes, a player who hasn’t quite found his footing in Barcelona colours since moving from Valencia in 2016.
The paper also say that even puts into doubt the club’s pursuit of Ross Barkley, who they were interested in signing in pre-season.
The right fit for Spurs?
As shown in recent matches, Mauricio Pochettino’s side has lacked a bit of composure and creativity building from deep into attacking areas and adding Andre Gomes would likely go a long way to solving that problem.
Rated at £22m by Transfermarkt, he hasn’t quite made himself a first-choice starter at the Nou Camp, but 50 appearances for the La Liga giants is nothing to sniff at in just over 12 moths.
You don’t get games for Barcelona without exceptional technical ability and tactical awareness, traits that would add a bit of class to the middle of the park at Spurs.
He may be a work in progress in terms of the elite top level Barcelona strive for, but Tottenham could be the perfect fit given Pochettino’s record of developing talent and taking their game to the next level.
At 24 years of age, he has plenty of time to improve and this should be a potential transfer that excites Spurs fans.
