According to a recent report from The Scottish Sun, Rangers are eyeing up a move for defender Dominic Iorfa. The 23-year-old currently plays his football at Premier League outfit Wolves having come up through the ranks at Molineux, yet no first team football under manager Nuno Espirito Santo this season has called his future at the West Midlands club into question.
And reports suggest that Steven Gerrard’s Gers are interested in a move for the £1.8 million-rated right back (as per Transfermarkt), as should Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers, as landing the youngster would give the Bhoys a huge upgrade on current right back Mikael Lustig.
The Breakdown
Ultimately, Light Blues chief Gerrard appears to be seeking a move for Iorfa in a bid to bolster the depth of his right back ranks, what with James Tavernier the only senior right back at Ibrox.
But given just how impressive the Englishman has been down the Rangers right-hand-side, producing figures that most forward players would be proud of, it’s difficult to see 23-year-old Iorfa going to Ibrox and commanding regular football – after all, Tavernier is arguably the best right back in Scotland.
Yet the opportunity for regular football could present itself at Celtic, as although Rodgers does have a few options in that area of the pitch, none of them have proven to be overly convincing in recent times.
Number one choice Lustig has been at Parkhead since 2012 and has over 250 appearances to his name for the Scottish giants, although it does appear as though time is catching up with the 31-year-old given he has been off the pace for much of the season so far.
But for alternatives Christian Gamboa and Andrew Ralston to fail to dethrone the Sweden international of the right back slot underlines just how lowly they are rated by manager Rodgers – another accomplished option appears necessary.
And that is exactly what Wolves’ Iorfa is given the 23-year-old, capped 13 times by England at Under-21 level in the past, has proven to be a hugely adept full back at Championship level in years gone by, appearing 107 times in the English second tier for a combination of Wolves and Ipswich Town.
Yes, he clearly isn’t in favour under Santo to suggest that maybe he isn’t yet cut out for Premier League football, but at the tender age of 23, alongside Rodgers’ proven track-record of developing and nurturing young talent, a move to Celtic could seriously aid the defender in reaching his undoubted potential.
And with Lustig having struggled and frankly been awful at times so far this season, the Bhoys simply must seek to get the better of Gerrard’s Rangers in pursuit of Iorfa, as doing so would give them a huge upgrade on the Swedish star.
